FILE FORMAT GUIDE

Acronis TIBX Backup (.TIBX)

A TIBX file stores an Acronis backup. Open it with compatible Acronis software to select a recovery point or recover data; it is not a general ZIP archive.

What is TIBX?

TIBX is a proprietary Acronis backup format. In the True Image naming scheme, incremental versions may be merged into their base backup. File layout and supported recovery features depend on the Acronis product, version and backup destination.

How to open TIBX

Use the source-specific workflow below and preserve the original file.

Acronis True Image (compatible release)Windows / Acronis recovery environment

Select the backup in a compatible Acronis application and choose the required recovery point. Use file recovery to a separate folder when you only need individual items. Other Acronis product workflows require their own version documentation.

Common uses and compatibility

  • Store recoverable copies of disk, partition or machine data in an Acronis backup workflow.
  • Keep recovery points managed by Acronis rather than by manually deleting archive members.

Things to check

  • A successful open is not a restore test. Recovery may replace data at the selected destination.
  • Backup naming and chain layout vary with product version; the extension alone does not establish independence.

How to open or browse a TIBX backup

Use the product and version associated with the backup. The True Image Windows guide describes adding downloaded backups back to the application and recovering their contents.

  1. Preserve the entire backup set and identify the Acronis product that created it.
  2. Select the backup and recovery point in compatible Acronis software. Supply the password if your backup is encrypted.
  3. Choose a separate recovery destination for the files you need; review every destination before starting a recovery.

TIBX vs TIB: what is different?

True Image introduced TIBX for newer workflows, while some backup types retain TIB. TIBX can consolidate incremental versions, so a file is not necessarily one independent recovery point. Storage details from one Acronis product should not be generalized to every TIBX archive.

Can I rename TIB to TIBX or convert it to ZIP?

Renaming changes only the filename. Acronis describes switching backup plans and recreating backups in the newer format. Preserve old recovery points while following the supported product workflow. A normal ZIP extractor is not a verified recovery path here.

Why are there numbered or small TIBX files?

The True Image filename counter does not directly identify a backup method or prove that a file is disposable. Acronis documents small auxiliary files after cleanup and says to manage cleanup through the application. Keep the full set until the vendor workflow confirms what can be removed.

Will recovery overwrite my disk?

Disk and partition recovery can replace existing destination data. Browsing a backup is a separate operation. Use file-level recovery for individual documents when available, and test critical recovery on a spare destination.
