CAMREC File: Legacy Camtasia Recording
A CAMREC file is a legacy Camtasia screen recording. TechSmith directs users to Camtasia 9, 2018 or 2019 to open it; Camtasia 2020 and later no longer support CAMREC.

What is CAMREC?
TechSmith retired CAMREC support in Camtasia 2020 and later. The supported recovery path requires Camtasia 2019 or earlier; producing an MP4 is a rendered export, not conversion to the newer TREC source format.
How to open CAMREC
Preserve the recording and confirm access to a compatible licensed legacy version before attempting migration.
Camtasia 2019 or earlierWindows (licensed legacy Camtasia)
Open the CAMREC in Camtasia 9, 2018 or 2019. Preserve the source; render MP4 only when a viewing copy is needed.
Common uses and compatibility
- Store editable Camtasia Studio screen-recording source data
Things to check
- Current Camtasia releases do not open CAMREC, and the legacy source cannot be converted to TREC.

How to get a viewable MP4 from CAMREC
The MP4 is a rendered viewing copy, not a replacement editable TREC recording.
- Preserve the original CAMREC and work from a backup.
- Open the recording in a compatible, licensed legacy Camtasia version.
- Produce the recording as an MP4 in that version.
- Import the resulting MP4 into a newer Camtasia version if needed.

Why won't my CAMREC file open?
First check the Camtasia version and legacy-version license eligibility. Renaming the extension does not create TREC data. If a compatible installation still cannot open the backup, ask TechSmith to investigate the file; the extension alone cannot establish corruption or guarantee recovery.

CAMREC vs CAMPROJ, TREC and TSCPROJ
CAMREC and TREC are recording sources. CAMPROJ is a legacy editing project; its migration to TSCPROJ uses Save As in a compatible older editor. Project migration does not turn the associated CAMREC recording into TREC. Keep project files and source media together.
