What is TREC?
TREC is a recording container, while a Camtasia project stores editing decisions and references media. A finished MP4 is an exported viewing copy. These different roles matter when sharing recordings or moving an editing project.
How to open TREC
Use the source-specific workflow below and preserve the original file.
Camtasia EditorWindows / macOS; compatible Camtasia release
Import the TREC recording into the Media Bin, add it to the timeline, then edit or export through Camtasia. Keep the original recording if you need its separate tracks or cursor metadata.
Common uses and compatibility
- Keep screen, camera, audio and cursor information together as editable recording media.
- Use the recording as source media in a Camtasia editing project.
Things to check
- A recording is not a self-contained editing project or a finished video export.
- The reviewed workflow uses Camtasia; playback in VLC or a generic web converter is not verified here.

How to open and edit a TREC recording
Use Camtasia Editor to import the recording. Source recordings and project edits are saved separately, so retain both when archiving work.
- Keep a backup of the original TREC.
- Import it into Camtasia Editor and add the media to the timeline.
- Save your edits as a project; retain the recording alongside the project.
How do I convert TREC to MP4?
Open the recording in Camtasia, arrange it on the timeline and use the editor's video export workflow. MP4 is a rendered viewing copy; preserve TREC if you need to revisit the source. Changing the extension to .mp4 does not perform an export.

TREC vs TSCPROJ vs CAMREC
TREC is recording media. TSCPROJ is an editing project that references media. CAMREC is an older recording format with a separate legacy opening path. A project saved under a newer name does not automatically upgrade every source recording.

Why is media missing when I share a project?
Sending a project file does not necessarily send the TREC recording it references. TechSmith recommends standalone or zipped project sharing to keep the source assets with the project. Confirm that the recording is included before sending an archive.

Can another video editor open TREC directly?
TechSmith identifies Camtasia as the opener for TREC. For another editor or a viewer, use a supported video export from Camtasia. This guide does not verify a third-party TREC decoder or claim that the browser analyzer can inspect its contents.
